The Ultimate Guide for Pulling Off Denim on Denim

How To Pull Off Denim on Denim
10 Tips on How To Pull Off Denim on Denim

Within the next few months its BOUND to chill over. (I see those eyes rolling) I don’t know about any of you, but my favourite part about fall is having an excuse to wear jeans without sweating your skin off, or getting the classic “Aren’t you scorching in those!?”

I have made a complete list of 10 tips and tricks to be able to pull off one of the greatest fashion statements known to this era. Now, this is a guide only for people who wish to start wearing their denim pieces together… or for those who feel like they cant pull this look off. I’m here to tell you, YES YOU CAN and YOU WILL as long as you have the… well, the last tip will explain.

Most of these looks can be put together by a simple trip to your local thrift store or charity shop, as always I encourage you to shop sustainably! However, I have also listed some items within a few of the tips that you are able to purchase online to help you achieve these suggestions paired with items you may already have in your closet

Stay Away From a Denim Set

(Something that was initially supposed to be paired together)

So you’re a 20-30 something want to avoid looking like you’re on an Osh Kosh B’Gosh commercial? Well that’s just NATURAL. One of the most important tips is to mix up your denims. Clearly, the outfit above was never intended to be worn together, but that’s the beauty- and the appealing juxtaposition. They are TWO visually SEPARATE pieces. It’s hard to really pinpoint why this works, it just does. The concept is similar to pattern mixing, in the fact that pairing two unique items makes you look smart and fashion-savvy.

Belt It Out!

A belt can be added to any outfit, and the denim on denim trend should be no exception! Belts are uber trendy right now, but honestly, it’s a staple that will never go out of style. The purpose of the belt in this use is to break up the two similar fabrics. Draw a line, so to speak, especially when you have denim on the top and bottom.

Wear Two Different Shades of Denim

(Don’t box yourself into blue!)

When I think of denim the first thing that comes to mind is BLUE. In reality, there are so many different shades of denim as we know it. This is a great way for those of us who do not want to give off the immediate “cool and casual” vibe of a blue denim and denim combo. Black denim is classy and slimming, white denim looks light and summery, the possibilities are endless!

Limit Yourself To Two Denim Pieces In Your Look

Hold up, this is only a suggestion. I’ve seen countless looks pulled off with more than two pieces, but its a start. Only having the two denim items makes way for more play room with an undershirt for example. Feel free to pair lace, floral, or solids with the denim on denim trend, really it’s your choice. Again, this is a great way to break up the stark impact of your denim pieces.

Show A Little Skin

For the gals (and guys) that are comfortable with showing a little midriff, this is a perfect tip for you! Much like the belt suggestion, this helps to break up your outfit into two unique halves of your look. For others, distressed denim is a more conservative way to achieve this same exact goal. Feel free to do both as well! You can never have too much confidence in your body!

Rock Some Super Statement Jewellery

The main point of wearing this trend isn’t always necessarily to scream out “HEY, IM WEARING ALL DENIM, AND I’M PULLING IT OFF” For me, wearing a statement piece of jewelry on top of it all is worth making, well, the statement.  When a denim top or jacket is paired with similar bottoms at first glance it’s all very homogeneous, making way for a statement to be made elsewhere. Statement jewellery can be tricky to pair with trendy outfits simply for the fact that said trendy outfits are bold enough, thus, the purpose of the statement necklace or earrings can be lost.

Patch It Up!

A big embroidered focal point on your denim is a great way to again, break up the look. (See a connection here?) You want these pieces of art to be seen first and then let the denim speak for itself afterward. Comfy, cool, casual, and best of all -hip. Patches have been popping up EVERYWHERE on denim and in fast fashion in general. Most times these patched up beauties are far overpriced for many-a-taste. Snatching up a great pair of jeans at your local thrift shop and using Etsy’s great handmade sellers is a wonderful way to achieve sustainable fashion, all while saving a bit of your hard-earned dough!

Rock That One-Piece!

(a great way to look like you have the double denim look without the stress of picking out pieces)

Ok, so you’re not ready to commit to wearing two (or more) denim pieces, but seethingly drool when you see someone else rocking it. Wear a cute one piece! Whether that be overalls, a dress, or romper, you can always break up the look with a belt, statement purse, or an undershirt!

Pay Attention to the Weight of Your Denim Pieces

(Chambray, Chambray, Chambray!)

I can’t stress this one enough. To really achieve making this look effortless, do not wear the same weight of denim. The fashion police are applauding this statement somewhere behind me as I’m sitting in Starbucks writing this. But really- chambray is your friend. Keep your denim light on top and heavier on the bottom is a snazzy rule of thumb. The last thing you want is to look weighed down and drab!

CONFIDENCE IN YOUR FASHION CHOICES

The most important suggestion (no- RULE!) of all! Wear what you like and don’t take any crap about it from anyone. The best accessory to wear is a smile and the best compliment to any outfit is confidence. Many of my friends gush over outfits I wear day to day and tell me “Emma, You can pull off anything!” Truth be told, I don’t think I can. You would never catch me dead in go-go boots, for instance. My trick is I don’t question my friends if I look good in something, mostly ever. I purchase the things I like and wear them when I want and where I want. Style is personal and always should be! It’s a direct expression of who you are inside and out.
